WOW is a collective of leaders within women in orthopaedics that aims to raise awareness of the barriers to equity and inclusion of women in orthopaedic surgery.
WOW seeks the engagement & partnership of orthopaedic leaders
advancing diversity, equity and inclusion for women (and those who identify as women) in orthopaedic surgery around the globe.
WOW aims to showcase the work of women in ortho societies/associations/collectives, empower women in nations where their voice is unheard and encourage (and facilitate) the formation of new associations for women in orthopaedics.
WOW seeks to be truly intersectional by acknowledging the different challenges of women in each nation and to advance cultural change through actions and research.
The need for women in ortho associations is real. Orthopaedics remains one of the least diverse medical specialties in the world. Our collective work shows in this map the most current numbers of women in orthopaedics throughout the globe. While some regions certainly have better representation than others there is no country with women composing 30% of orthopaedic surgeons. This is significant as 30% has been determined to be the threshold needed to disrupt bias. At 30% of the population the critical mass has been reached so that the underrepresented population becomes incorporated and represented in the institutional culture - this is key to the success of the underrepresented group. Numerous studies have shown that female surgeons help provide culturally competent care and can help address healthcare disparities. ncreasing women in orthopaedics to over 30% benefits everyone.
WOW is very proud to present the first compilation of pioneer female orthopaedic surgeons from all over the world.
This is a timeline of trailblazers and with this timeline we hope to help raise some of the questions that are still important for us to discuss in our present.
On August 28th, 8AM Central time US we presented our Symposium in partnership with the AAOS. The full talk is avaible to watch!
